Rescuing a German shepherd is the best feeling in the world. Not only are you saving a life, but you’re also getting a new best friend that will be thankful, loyal, and loving for the rest of their life.
Sadly, there are no shortages of dogs to rescue. Shelters are full of wonderful dogs so if you are looking for one, there are many available for adoption. If you do adopt, then you can share your own rescue story, such as this one.
One of the hardest things for those that rescue is that not all dogs can be saved. It’s unfathomable that so many dogs intended to be pets end up in shelters. This beautiful white German shepherd was one such dog.
Gemma was suffering from hair loss and oily skin. Rather than taking her to the vet, her family dumped her at a shelter where she faced an uncertain future. This sweet dog didn’t deserve to be abandoned in her time of need.
Gemma was suffering and in great pain so shelter staff began to give her a bath. She had to be sedated to remove the oily residue on her fur. It was then discovered she had demodectic mange, a treatable skin condition caused by mites.
Thankfully, St. Bonnies Sanctuary in Canyon County, CA pulled Gemma from the shelter so they could give her a better life. While there, a foster stepped up who would give her baths three times a day and provide her the twenty-four-hour care she needed.
Gemma began to heal inside and out and began gaining weight. But it soon became obvious that her weight gain was not only due to her new healthy diet, Gemma was expecting a litter of puppies.
At her first vet visit, an ultrasound revealed that Gemma was pregnant with five puppies. Happily, all five were born healthy. Thanks to her new foster family, all five were also adopted into loving homes.
It took Gemma a little longer to find her forever home. She still had some healing to do but she eventually blossomed into a beautiful, happy, silly dog that one day found the perfect family to join.
It was hard for Gemma’s foster mom to say goodbye but Gemma found a loving family to call her own. She now has a new young best friend who loves to play with her every day and give her plenty of cuddles.
There are many dogs like Gemma just waiting to find their forever home. Please inspire someone to adopt by sharing this sweet rescue story.
