World’s Oldest Dog Bobi Turns 31

This sweet, old dog just celebrated his 31st birthday with his family and 100 friends by his side.

Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo is the world’s oldest dog. And, he just celebrated his 31st birthday, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Bobi celebrated with his family and friends at his home located in the rural Portuguese village of Conqueiros, where he has lived all his 31 years.

His owner, Leonel Costa said they had a very traditional Portuguese party for Bobi and served local meats and fish. They even had a dance troupe perform with Bobi in one of their routines.

Costa was only 8 years old when he rescued Bobi from certain death before the puppy’s eyes were even open. Costa has owned several dogs since that young age, including Bobi’s mother who lived to be 18.

But, Bobi is something special and Costa said he never expected him to live as long as he has. He was officially named the oldest dog on record. "It's a feeling of pride we can't explain," Costa, 38, told Reuters.

Bobi’s birth date has also been confirmed by the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria, which registered Bobi in 1992 and his age has been verified by a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government.

Costa attributes Bobi’s long life due to his diet of fresh foods, living in a calm and peaceful environment, being able to roam the countryside, never having been leashed, and spending plenty of time in the fresh air and sunshine.

“Looking at him is like remembering people who were part of our family and are no longer here … my father, my brother, my grandparents,” Costa said.

Although Bobi has lived a long healthy life, he is now showing his age. He sleeps more and rests after eating his meals. He finds it more difficult to walk so he spends most of his time resting in the yard. His eyesight is also fading so at times he bumps into things when he walks.
