This deaf, senior pit bull named JR had been at the East Valley Animal Shelter in Los Angeles for 7 months when Elli Frank saw him there. The dog had cancer, was in pain, and she couldn’t stop thinking about him.
She knew nobody was coming for him and she didn’t want him to die alone in the shelter. She wanted him to know what a loving home was like for whatever time he had left so she promised him she’d come back and help him find a home.
They met one day when she was out visiting shelter dogs during the West Coast leg of a cross-country adventure she was on advocating for special needs rescue dogs through her non-profit, Mr. Bones & Co.
She had already been traveling around the country for 3 months with her two dogs advocating for rescue dogs, especially those with special needs like JR. Her heart went out to JR because he reminded her of her own dogs.
So, she took pictures of JR and began networking with him. He received many immediate responses but sadly, they all fell through after the initial emotional reaction to him wore off.
But then one day all that changed. A woman wanted to adopt JR but they’d have to get him to Phoenix. Happily, a man named Nick who rented planes volunteered to pick up JR and fly him to his new home.
JR was a great traveler and was soon on his way to meet his new mom, Jackie. He met Jackie and she stayed outside while he decompressed. When he was ready, he walked into his new home and new life.
After spending 7 months locked in a shelter, he was finally receiving the love and help he needed. He thrived in his new home and was treated for his diseases. JR is now a happy boy with a great life.
JR’s story just goes to show how a dog that almost everyone gave up on is so valuable and has so much love to give. It’s awesome how everyone came together to make that happen and that he’s now doing so well.
We hope you enjoyed his video. As always, please feel free to share with your friends.
