Having a pet is a life-changing decision and can add meaning and happiness to your life. But having a pet means you also have a lot of responsibilities. This is even more the case when special needs pets are involved because they require specific care and attention. These types of pets are often left unadopted in animal shelters because they're harder to care for but if you have the time, the energy and the money, taking care of a special needs pet can be so fulfilling not only for the pet but for their humans as well.

Sally the mermaid cat is one of these special pets who need some extra care but it's so worth it. She is a paraplegic who requires a wheelchair to move around and has helped people around the world learn more about life as a special needs pet.

  • Meet Sally. She is an 8-year-old calico cat. She is also a paraplegic who is paralysed from below the waist.
  • Janez Jeretič, Sally's owner, found her about 9 years ago on the ground in a park.
  • Sally wasn't moving and Janez thought she was dead.
  • But then, Janez saw Sally's arms move so she checked and found that Sally was still alive. So she rushed her over to the vet.
  • When they did X-rays on Sally, they found that she had a hunting bullet lodged in her neck. The vet also told Janez that Sally would probably never be able to walk again.
  • Due to the injuries caused by the bullet, Sally would not be able to feel nor move her back legs and also part of her back.
  • But none of this has stopped Sally from living her best life.
  • About dressing Sally up as a mermaid, Janez said, “I got the idea of giving her a mermaid costume after some friends of mine who visited me saw Sally and were a little creeped out by how she couldn’t walk”
  • Janez continued, “She doesn’t feel it at all, but since it’s made from this fuzzy material it helps her keep the warmth in her body”
  • Janez also wanted everyone to see that Sally was an amazing cat who had had a hard life but she was living a great life now.
  • “I wanted people to see Sally the same way I see her, as this beautiful magical creature who has suffered a lot but is now very happy with her life,” said Janez.
  • But taking care of Sally requires some special care every day because there are some things that she can't do herself due to her injury.
  • Janez says that, “I have to make sure I empty her bladder manually at least three times a day and make sure she has room to move around on her own without getting stuck.”
  • She continues: “So yeah, it is a lot of responsibility and work but the reward of seeing her happy, of hearing her purr when we cuddle, and of seeing her ‘running’ around the house to her favorite sunbathing spots makes it all worth it”
  • Sally the mermaid cat's Instagram page has fans from around the world, with over 6,000 followers.
  • Sally the mermaid cat has become an advocate for special needs animals around the world. Janez even put out a book about her.
  • Sally is proof that, with a little bit of love and care, special needs pets can live well-adjusted and happy lives, just like any other pet.
  • Sally also enjoys being dressed up in little outfits. Which is purrfect because look how cute she looks!
  • Sally was really lucky to have Janez walk by and then provide her the help she needed to not only make it through her injury but to be given a second chance at life.
  • And in return, Sally helps make life magical and awesome for Janez and helps create awareness about special needs animals around the world.
