“You can’t give up,” said Carole King, a Washington woman who quit her job as a postal carrier to search for her lost dog.  She never lost hope and her dog was found 57 days later, in another state.

When Carole and her husband, Verne, took a trip to Glacier National Park, they never imagined they would lose their beloved border collie, Katie.  But somehow, Katie managed to escape from their hotel room.

Lost near the wide open space near the national park, and knowing that Katie was a bit skittish, the King’s immediately knew it might be a challenge to find her.  So they turned to social media and began passing out hundreds of fliers in the small town of Kalispell, Montana.

They tirelessly fielded calls, and drove and walked for miles, yelling Katie’s name and whistling, KCRA-TV reported.  Local residents helped them in their search.

Not about to leave their dog behind, Carole quit her job to keep looking for Katie.  Fifty-seven days later, with the help of a total stranger, she spotted Katie resting under the shade of a tree.

“I just bear-hugged her,” she told the Daily Inter Lake newspaper. “People are stopping in their vehicles, getting out and hugging us. I think the whole neighborhood knew that we found her.”

The King’s immediately took Katie to a local vet, who recognized her from the media campaign to find her.  “Is this the famous, Katie?” the vet asked.

While she was lost, Katie lost 12 pounds, was severely dehydrated, and was on the brink of starvation.  The good news is, she’s expected to completely recover.

“I never gave up. I never lost hope,” King told the newspaper. “I think what I got out of this was the kindness of strangers.”

We love this heartwarming story of people helping people, and people helping animals.
