Archie was a blind, senior, arctic fox. But, when he needed a home, he wasn’t turned away.
Kim DeFisher of Artic Fox Wildlife Rescue provides a lifelong sanctuary for foxes and wolf dogs that cannot be released into the wild. So, when Archie the old, blind fox needed a safe place to live out his remaining years, she took him in.
No one exactly knows Archie’s history. When he was 8 years old, he was dropped off at a dog shelter in Colorado. He was completely blind and it is assumed his owners acquired him through an exotic dealer and then one day no longer wanted him or were unable to care for him.
From the shelter, Archie was placed in a fox rescue. But Archie wasn’t happy there. He didn’t want to leave his enclosure or be near the other foxes. It was clear Archie needed a new home that’s when he was moved to the Artic Fox Rescue.
He began to come out of his shell at his new home with Kim. It wasn’t long before he adapted to his new life. He soon learned commands, was coming for treats, and even met his future girlfriend, Lulu.
Because he is blind, Kim developed special ways to get his attention and feed him his treats. He has learned to navigate his new, roomy enclosure. He’s much happier at the fox rescue and enjoys all the love and cuddles he receives there.
His girlfriend seems to understand that Archie is special. She likes to help him through life even if she loves to nitpick him. In those ways, they act like an old married couple who like to bicker and have fun together. But, Archie is a sweet boy and lets Lulu do whatever she wants.
Archie and Lulu have more than each other, too. They have more fox friends and even have the occasional playdate with another couple, which they love. They are playful and adorable and full of fun.
Although they are wild foxes, because of their captivity and past, they lack some of the instincts they need to survive on their own in the wild so they will always remain at the sanctuary. But they are happy there and receive lots of freedom.
Even though she respects his wild nature, Archie and Kim share a special bond. She doesn’t view him as a pet, he’s more of an old friend that she has a lot of respect for. Archie is now almost 10, which is the lifespan for an Arctic fox and he’ll have a home with Kim as long as he lives.
