In this video, you'll be watching a competition routine from the FCI dog dance championships that took place in 2016 in Moscow, Russia, from June 23rd to June 26th. The participants took part in either the freestyle division or the heelwork to music division. In this video, you see a good example of a freestyle competition where this dog and handler combination came in 2nd place overall whilst competing with the best 10 finalists.
In FCI dog dancing, a handler has to compete for the country of which he is a national or a country where he has his legal residence. Each country that wishes to participate must send 3-4 dog and handler teams to the international championship. The results of the national team will be defined by the points of the three highest-scoring “dog and handler teams” added together. If at this stage two teams share the same points, their fourth member’s scores will be taken into account to define the order of these teams.
In this video, you'll see Lusy Imbergerova and her Belgian Tervuren, Deril, of Italy, compete. Belgian Tervurens are 1 of the 4 breeds that make up the Belgian Shepherds. The other three are the Groenendael, the little-known Laekenois, and the very popular Malinois.
As you can see, Deril is just happy to be there with her. It looks as if the two are the best of friends, and likely have been for a while now. Lusy is clothed in military gear, and it looks like they are ready for battle. A battle on the doggy freestyle dance floor.
The routine begins with a salute. Deril is watching his master, Lusy, very carefully to see what he needs to do. Training and competing are fun when it's done right!
The first thing that Deril does is lay down for bed. As it's a military routine, they have to simulate camping out and getting some rest so they can be ready for whatever may come the next day. After Deril goes to bed, Lusy herself lays down and wraps up with a blanket.
This is when the Reveille Army Song begins to play. Hearing it, Deril “wakes up” and uncovers Lusy. But she doesn’t wake up. What will ensure she wakes and begins her duties? Deril knows! He fake relieves himself on her. Of course, this would wake up just about anyone. And I'm sorry, but what does one do to teach a dog to fake pee on something? Who do you even go to ask? I have no clue, but it's funny.
After Lusy "wakes up," they are now ready for their performance. “The Warrior Song,” begins to play and they both get to work impressing the judges, but more importantly, the crowd, as they begin to march into their routine!
