When she was rescued by Michele of Republic Rescue, this sweet pit bull was so terrified that she couldn’t even walk.
When Michele first met Poppy for the first time, Poppy was frozen with fear. The poor dog was so afraid it took a team to get her out of her kennel at the shelter. She refused to walk so they had to place her in a wire crate and wheel her on a cart out to Michele’s car.
Once she got to her new foster home, she was so scared she hid in a bush. She was terrified and untrusting of her rescuer. It was sad to see her in such a state and Michele knew she had her work cut out for her.
She made Poppy a safe space in her home and put her crate inside. But once there, Poppy hid and didn’t want to come out. When she finally did leave her crate, she tried to be invisible so she wouldn’t be noticed by anyone.
Being ignored wasn’t about to happen so Michele just kept loving on Poppy, bringing her treats, and giving her attention. But, she never forced anything and gave Poppy the space and time she needed. Then one day, something magical happened.
Poppy was sniffing around outside with Michele nearby reading a book. Suddenly, Poppy walked over and forced her head under Michele’s hand and for the first time, requested love and comfort from her.
Michele told her she was safe and then started to cry happy tears. She was thrilled that Poppy wanted to trust her and was ready to be happy again. Soon, Poppy was wagging her tail and even getting up on the bed.
When she was ready, they began working on introducing her to a leash and harness. It took a while because Poppy was so scared but eventually she was ready to go on her first walk. She even started playing with other dogs.
Poppy was soon ready to go on the next step of her journey and leave her first foster home for another one. She went to live with her new foster, Rylee, where a dog named Oak lived.
Poppy was scared when she arrived but as soon as she met Oak, she instantly loved and trusted him. Before they knew it, Oak was walking Poppy on a leash and even taught her how to swim even though she was scared of water at first.
Time passed and Michele reached out to Rylee and said it was time to start thinking about finding Poppy her forever home. But Rylee responded that she couldn’t let Poppy go so now Poppy has the best home ever.
We hope you enjoyed her amazing rescue story. As always, please feel free to share with your friends.
