When a special needs puppy the size of a mouse needed a foster, Leslie from NorCal Bully Breed Rescue couldn’t say no.
The American bully puppy had a cleft pallet and would need hand feedings to survive. The puppy would have to be tube fed and live in an incubator and Leslie was willing to do all she could for him.
When Kane arrived, he was so small, he was only the size of a Tic Tac box. But he was strong initially and despite his tiny size, Leslie said he was “enormous, the size of a bear cub.”
But Kane had more problems than just a cleft pallet. By eight weeks, it became obvious he was blind in one eye and the other eye had scarring over the top of it. So, they didn’t know if he would be completely blind.
Also, as Kane grew, he didn’t eat as he should. He began to fail to thrive and lose weight. He simply wasn’t interested in food and would refuse to eat for days at a time, which began to cause him developmental problems.
Then one day, all that changed. He suddenly decided he liked to eat and even started to get excited over his meals. He’d get so happy, raise his back legs off the ground, and start to get stronger.
He surprised everyone when he started living life on his terms. He like to snuggle but was spunky and didn’t take any garbage from the French bulldogs he lived with. He had come so far; it was time to find him his forever home.
So, when he was ready, he went to live with Melissa. When Melissa picked him up, she was so happy to have him. She called him a big ball of play dough that was covered with movable skin. He was her little potato.
She took him to a specialist who suggested removing his eye as soon as possible. After that surgery, he recovered well and was an even happier puppy than he was before.
Despite all the health challenges he had in his early life, he overcame them all. He was a strong little fighter and overcame all the odds against him he was now living his best life with his best friend, Melissa.
We hope you enjoyed this heartwarming rescue story that just proves that special needs puppies can survive their challenges and make loving companions. They deserve the best and it’s so wonderful that the rescue stepped up to save Kane.
