He was given almost no chance of survival but Lee Asher of Asher House wasn’t ready to give up on the abused dog.
When Lee Asher met Rocky for the first time, he was in the worst condition of any dog he’d ever seen. But he still had “fight in his eyes” so that meant there was still a glimmer of hope that he’d pull through.
Rocky was a large husky dog but he was so emaciated that he only weighed 28 pounds. He was nothing but skin and bones. He had pressure sores on his chest from presumably being locked in his kennel and being forced to live in his filth and his paws were damaged from not being used to walking.
Despite the team of people trying to save Rocky, the vet warned that his condition was critical. She told Lee she didn’t know if it was too late for Rocky, who was having trouble keeping in the nutrition he desperately needed.
But despite his condition, Rocky had not given up on life. So, Lee gently led him to the van, picked him up, and put him inside. He was committed to helping Rocky recover and that would happen at the sanctuary.
Under the care of Asher house, a week later, Rocky was doing better. He was still terrified of men but he was slowly learning he was safe despite the abuse he’d suffered in the past. He didn’t yet know it, but he would soon understand what unconditional love is.
The day finally came when Rocky was strong enough to go on his first pack walk. He was nervous and unsure about leaving the safety of his kennel but Rocky had been watching the other dog through the window and was ready to finally meet them face to face.
Slowly Lee and Rocky made their way outside where all of Rocky’s new friends were waiting to help him continue his healing journey. Even though Rocky had never met another dog before, he began to integrate himself into the pack.
Regardless of his past and his health condition, Rocky seems to be beating the odds. He bravely went on his first pack walk and began using the paws that he was never allowed to use like a normal dog before.
He’s now living his second chance with people who’ll never give up on him. As long as he continues to fight for his survival, Asher House will fight for him and he’ll forever be part of his new pack.
It isn’t long before Rocky is off-leash and walking with the other dogs. He’s even approaching Lee for love and reassurance, something he was too scared to do before. The timid dog is taking brave steps toward his bright future.
Keep fighting, Rocky. We hope you enjoyed his rescue story. Please feel free to share with your friends.
