Every day, K9s put their lives on the line to protect their partners. But on this day, Officer Nitchman saved his police dog from a tornado.
It was a routine day for Officer Joel Nitchman with the Deer Park Police Department in Deer Park Texas until a thunderstorm produced an unexpected tornado.
Officer Nitchman and his K9 partner Roni have served the department together for six years. Narcotics K9 Roni and Nitchman have lots of stories to tell and have shared many experiences.
But on this day, the two of them faced a new situation. They had just returned to the police department from training when the winds started picking up. Roni was still in his kennel in the squad car when Nitchman realized that a strong storm was upon them and he ran out to the car to get Roni.
As he raced to the car, he realized the storm was powerful and debris started to hit his face. Lightening was flashing around him but there was no doubt in his mind that he would help his friend and partner, who had always been there for him.
By the time he reached the car door, the winds were so strong that he couldn’t open it and had to run around the other side. But once he had the door open, Roni didn’t want to get out, preferring to stay in the safety of the vehicle.
Roni is a smart dog but he didn’t know there was a tornado heading toward them. And, then “all heck broke loose.” Thankfully it was at that moment that Roni decided to trust Officer Nitchman and get out of the car with only seconds left and near zero visibility.
Thankfully, the pair made it back to the station in time even though it wasn’t easy to get past some fencing that was now blocking the door while they made their way through the wind and the rain.
The station’s security camera captured the entire terrifying event and soon Roni and Officer Nitchman went viral. Nitchman is so happy he was able to save his best friend and partner and is happy his dog is safe.
A week later, the two were back on duty. We hope you enjoyed this amazing story about a police officer’s love for his dog. As always, please feel free to share with your friends.
