His dad, Heath, said they named him Sherman because the name was as ridiculous as he is.
Heath and Angel first met Sherman at an animal rescue event. Heath noticed his huge head right away and after they took him home, the couple even measured it. Turns out, Sherman’s head is the size of a regulation volleyball.
The couple agreed to foster Sherman knowing he was an older dog. But, his age wasn’t all that he had going against him. Sherman also smelled terrible. He was missing the fur on his elbows and he had a weird hunchback.
One of Sherman’s eyes bulged out and looked painfully ready to pop. His ears had been cut off leaving only the tiniest of nubs behind. But despite it all, Sherman wanted to be loved so much that they couldn’t leave him behind.
The first night in his new foster home, when Heath took him outside, Sherman walked into his leg and began to squeal as if he had been hit. Heath realized that Sherman thought it was the beginning of a beating and began to comfort him.
Sherman had lots of fear but was a sweet dog. He got along with the other dogs in the house and it wasn’t long before the couple knew they were going to keep him. But all their love couldn’t prevent the health problems Sherman had.
He had his eye removed followed by two knee surgeries. He almost died several times due to intestinal problems. Sherman ended up costing the couple $30,000 that they didn’t have to spend.
But, Sherman was worth every penny. He was a lovable ambassador of his breed and deserved all the love and care he was given. And even after all that love and the best vet care, it still wasn’t easy.
Sherman developed hip problems, anxiety, and sundowners. He was a lot of work but never stopped showing his family how much he loved them. Then one day the unthinkable happened.
On top of everything Sherman had gone through, he woke up one day in a panic. He lost all the sight in his remaining eye. Trapped in darkness, Sherman was terrified and had been living in pain. So, they decided it was time to say goodbye.
Sherman left his family while lying on his comfy bed after receiving lots of love, cheeseburgers, and some donuts. Sherman was a good boy to the end and they kept their promise to their best boy that no one would ever hurt him again.
We hope you were touched by Sherman’s rescue story. As always, please feel free to share with your friends.
