We like to think of ourselves as distant from animals. But even animals are capable of great compassion.
Hazel, a 3-year-old Yorkie-Chihuahua-poodle mix who lives with her mom, Monica Burks, in Abilene, Texas, proved that fact recently. Monica has had her since she was just a few weeks old and says she has always been a very kind pup. One rainy day, Hazel's mom let her out for a bathroom break. Because of the weather, Monica decided not to accompany her. Hazel never wandered far, especially in the rain.
But this time, Hazel wasn't at the door when Monica checked, which was not only puzzling, but worrying. Monica decided that she better go and look for Hazel. But as she was about to walk out of the door, she saw Hazel trotting back up to the house in the rain. But that's not all. As she got closer, she noticed that Hazel had a tiny kitten in tow.
On her potty break, Hazel must've seen or smelled the abandoned kitten and decided that she needed to be saved.
“There must be something called pure love. I saw Hazel’s maternal instincts come to light,” Monica said.
Hazel convinced the kitten to follow her. And every time she lagged behind, Hazel would stop and coax her along until they finally got home. Monica brought them both inside and looked over the kitten before giving Hazel a treat for her kindness.
And the best part of the story? Monica's brother, Michael, decided to adopt the rescued kitten who they named Sheba! If you liked this story, please leave a like and share!
