Rottweilers are loving and loyal pets. They were bred to work, herd, and also make excellent family guardians. Like most working breeds, Rottweilers need a job to truly be happy. If they don’t have one, they will find one on their own.
Such as the case of this adorable rottweiler named Jakey. Jakey is a six-year-old who has given herself the unusual job of guarding the family bread. She began guarding the bread four years ago whenever her family would leave the house.
“She started this four years ago when we moved to our farm,” Katrina Frank, Jakey’s mom, told The Dodo. “Every time we would leave she would hide the bread.”
According to her family, when they leave, Jakey sniffs out the bread and takes it to keep it safe. “We have a bread box so she likes to hop up and pull it out of there,” Frank said. “If I leave it in the pantry instead, she nudges the door open and gets it out. I've put it in the refrigerator before and she has opened the door to get to it.”
Jakey takes her job of bread guardian very seriously. She never takes a bite and carefully keeps it safe from the other dogs in the house. “She likes to put it behind the couch and lay by it. Otherwise, [she puts it in] the closet in my bedroom,” Frank said. “I assume she thinks it's the most important thing to us because we use it so often.”
When her family returns, Jakey always leads them to the bread. She never keeps it hidden away for very long. If the family is out of loaves, she’s also been known to guard other baked goods, like rolls and cookies.
“If I'm out of bread, she moves on to baked goods,” Frank said. “Once she took a Tupperware of cookies off the counter and hid all 17 individually without breaking any. She led me to all of them.”
We think Jakey is just adorable and love how seriously she takes her job as bread guardian. According to her family, if they have no baked goods in the house, she will move on to guarding the butter.
Please share this sweet pooch with the quirky job with your family and friends.
