Because of their advanced age and medical conditions, older dogs are often overlooked by society. It’s so common for dogs to enter shelters because they’ve gotten too old for their owners to handle. Maybe the owner is impatient with the time it takes their dog to go to the bathroom. Maybe the owner doesn’t like the fact their dog isn’t a cute puppy anymore. Maybe there’s been money issues and the dog’s medical expenses are low on the list of priorities. Whatever the case may be, senior dogs have a particularly difficult time being re-homed. But one woman is doing her part to keep these elderly pets from losing hope, and it’s absolutely incredible to watch.
In 2006, Sher Polvinale and her late husband, Joe, created a senior pet sanctuary in their Gaithersburg, MD home. At House With A Heart, canine and feline residents who would otherwise be homeless and/or euthanized are provided with a loving forever home. These animals are able to live out their lives in a comfortable, nurturing environment. This is no temporary foster placement, but a permanent home run by an amazing woman who devotes herself full-time to caring for the pets.
Nearly two-dozen dogs are now spending their golden years at House With A Heart. Sher is joined by a team of kindhearted volunteers who go above and beyond for her four-legged residents. From washing and feeding to playing and pampering, no expense is spared.
What makes this so touching is the fact Sher never leaves the house; she’s always there watching over the dogs. As a result, her social life has fallen to the wayside — but to her, knowing the dogs are safe is completely worth it.
