Brutus was dumped at the shelter because he was too aggressive. But when Lee Asher met him for the first time, he quickly realized there was much more to his story.
When his owners left Brutus at the shelter, they sent along a note explaining why they were leaving him there. In part, the note said,
“We’ve decided to surrender Brutus. His behavior is uncontrollable and we do not feel safe in the house with him. We don’t take this decision lightly, but last night was awful and we cannot do this any longer.”
Given the owner's sentiments about their dog, Lee didn’t know what he was getting into. Since the owners also indicated that Brutus didn’t like men, he wasn’t sure how the dog would react to him.
But from the moment they met, Brutus was nothing but a big love bug. He rolled around, cuddled, and showed nothing but gentleness. He even allowed Lee to pick him up and carry him. Despite his large size, he didn’t fight being held in Lee’s arms.
So, Lee decided to see how Brutus would be around some of his other dogs. He brought some with him and decided to first introduce him to one of the little dogs. At that first introduction, it wasn’t Brutus who growled, it was a little dog but Brutus didn’t even react.
The next step was to get one of the larger dogs out of the car and see how Brutus would do with that dog. As Lee and the shelter held their breath waiting to see how the two dogs would react to each other, Brutus was nothing but a gentleman and quickly made a new friend.
After that, Brutus loaded up with the rest of the dogs and took his freedom ride to Asher House so he could meet the rest of the pack. He hadn’t even been there a day and was settled right in and playing in the lake with the rest of the dogs. It was as if he’d been there for years.
There was no sign of aggression from Brutus. There is no telling how or why his owners had issues with him. He was nothing but the best boy from the moment he arrived. He deserved and got a new name, Hooch, to honor his new life.
Hooch hit the jackpot when he was rescued by Lee of Asher House. We hope you enjoyed his rescue story. As always, please feel free to share with your friends.
